Participating community FAQs

How do I get started with the Hefty ReNew Program?

Select your state on the map or check the list of programs to see if your community participates in the Hefty ReNew Program.

If eligible, you may request a starter kit or purchase bags at participating retailers. From there, it’s easy—simply fill up your bag with accepted items and drop it in your curbside recycling or a participating drop-off site.

The recycling center separates the orange bags and sends them to facilities to give new life to the plastics. They turn hard-to-recycle plastics into things we can use, like building materials and lumber. Keep recycling as you normally do. The Hefty ReNew program supplements your recycling, but it doesn’t replace it. With a little effort, we can keep trash out of landfills!

What if my community doesn’t participate in the Hefty ReNew Program?

If your community doesn’t participate, you can:

  • Contact us to find out more information.
  • Reach out to your local community waste and recycling organizations to encourage them to participate.

Where do my Hefty ReNew Orange Bags go after recycling?

Hefty® has partners across the United States that have a strong demand for hard-to-recycle items. Recycling centers separate the orange bags from other items. Then, they’re sent to places that give new life to hard-to-recycle plastics. They’re made into items we can use, like building materials and lumber. The orange bags get recycled along with the hard-to-recycle plastics inside.

What’s the difference between curbside and drop-off recycling?

Each community may have one or both options for recycling the Hefty ReNew Orange Bags:

  1. Curbside—drop your filled Hefty ReNew bags in with the regular recycling bin you put on the curb.
  2. Drop-off—some communities have designated drop-off locations where you can deposit your Hefty ReNew Bags.
