FAQs about acceptable plastics

What items are NOT accepted in the Hefty® ReNew® Orange Bags?

Please do not bag these items in the orange bag: Plastic bottles, jugs, and tubs are currently accepted in your recycling program. Continue to recycle these plastics, along with paper, cardboard, cans, glass bottles, and jars, with your normal recycling. The items should be empty, clean, and placed loosely in a recycling bin or drop-off container. Also, do not include these items in the bag:

  • No batteries
  • No food, liquid, or coffee grounds
  • No medical products or hazardous waste
  • No hoses, tubes, or rope
  • No foil or aluminium

Where can I buy Hefty ReNew Orange Bags?

First, find out if the program is available in your community. If available in your area, each participating community has a list of stores where you can purchase the Orange Bags online or in-store.

Should I put items I am already recycling in the Hefty ReNew Orange Bags?

No. Be sure to continue your regular recycling routine. Items accepted in your local recycling program should continue to be placed into recycling containers. The items should be clean, dry, empty, loose, and unbagged. This includes paper, cardboard, cartons, glass and plastic bottles, tubs, cups, aluminum cans, and steel cans.

Your orange bags should contain only items accepted in the Hefty ReNew Program. When full, orange bags should be tied tightly to ensure proper recovery.

I already recycle plastic—how is this different? What do you mean by “hard-to-recycle” plastics?

Plastic bottles, jugs, and tubs are currently accepted in your recycling program. Plastics, paper, cardboard, cans, and sometimes glass bottles and jars should still go in recycling bins. The items should be empty, clean, and placed loosely in your recycling container. Do not bag these materials in the orange bag.

The Hefty ReNew™ program complements existing curbside and drop-off programs—it does not replace them. We're on a mission to collect those difficult plastics that are often tossed aside and ensure they don’t end up in landfills.

The outside of the bag and the lists above list acceptable hard-to-recycle plastics. All items must be empty, clean, and dry.
